CLOSE
The World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 kicks off with two finals, as athletes compete for medals in the men’s and women’s 35km race walk events during the first session.
Will Japan’s Masatora Kawano – bronze medallist in Budapest in 2023 – win his first gold medal after setting a world record in October? In the women’s event, world record-holder Maria Perez of Spain will have high hopes of winning again.
In the stadium, a host of qualification action means fans will have the opportunity to see many global medallists and record-holders during this opening session. USA’s world record-holder Ryan Crouser is set to be among them, as he opens his campaign in shot put qualification. This session will also showcase the sole mixed-gender event on the programme: the mixed 4x400m relay.

NOTES

*The location of each competition may be subject to change in the future due to changes in the competition management plan.
*The seating area is subject to change depending on future venue set-up plans.
* Please note that the athletes and countries/regions listed here are not confirmed to participate in the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25.
The evening session will deliver three track and field finals.
In the women’s 10,000m, all eyes will be onBeatrice Chebet. The Kenyan distance star improved the world record to 28:54.14 last year and won Olympic titles in both the 5000m and 10,000m. Should she decide to double up again in Tokyo, she could complete the first part of her task on day one.
The men’s shot put final offers a clash of titans. Can world record-holder Ryan Crouser retain his title against the likes of his US compatriot Joe Kovacs, the two-time world gold medallist and 2024 world leader, and Italy’s Leonardo Fabbri, who both joined him on the podium at the 2023 World Championships?
Then there’s the mixed 4x400m. USA will be out for revenge after breaking the world record in the heats but then being pipped to the Olympic title by a Dutch quartet anchored by Femke Bol.
This session also includes heats for both the women’s and men’s 100m – where all the sprint stars will start their campaigns.
Several Japanese athletes will be looking to shine on day one. Ryuji Miura finished sixth in the men’s 3000m steeplechase at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, Abdul Hakim Sani Brown made the last two men’s 100m finals in Budapest and Oregon, Sumire Hata is the national women’s long jump record-holder, and Nozomi Tanaka is the national women’s 1500m record-holder.

■About the opening ceremony
The opening ceremony will take place before the start of the evening session on day one (13 Sep). If you purchase a ticket for the day one evening session, you will be able to attend the opening ceremony. Please note that tickets specifically for attending the opening ceremony are not available for sale.

The spotlight will be on the women’s marathon during the day two morning session.
This race could offer fans the chance to see Kenyan Ruth Chepngetich’s blistering pace, following her world record of 2:09:56 in Chicago in October. This year’s course starts and finishes at the stadium, which has been rare in recent years, so spectators can catch the start and finish of the marathon while watching other events. The Japanese team will be looking to put on a show.
The women’s 100m hurdles has boomed in recent years, and Mako Fukube and Yumi Tanaka – semifinalists at the Paris Olympics – are looking to rise to the occasion.

The men’s and women’s 100m finals will be held on the same day, with the world’s fastest sprinters decided during the day two evening session.
The men’s race is sure to be intense, with defending champion Noah Lyles looking to lead the US team, Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo coming off a silver medal in Budapest, and the Jamaican team looking to fight for a medal. Japan’s Abdul Hakim Sani Brown will aim to win his first medal.
The women’s race promises a battle between the likes of USA’s defending champion Sha’Carri Richardson, Olympic gold medallist Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia, and the Jamaican team. The men’s 10,000m final will deliver strong competition from athletes such as Olympic gold medallist Joshua Cheptegei of Uganda, and the tenacity of the Japanese team.

The men’s marathon will headline the morning session on the third day.
The Kenyan and Ethiopian teams are expected to be the leading contenders for top places, but the Japanese runners should leverage their local advantage. This year’s marathon course passes by Ginza, Tokyo Station and the Imperial Palace, intending to allow runners to fully experience Tokyo’s charm, history and culture. The session will also have qualification rounds for two track and two field events. The action-packed schedule covers jumping, throwing, hurdles and long-distance events, giving spectators an experience of the true thrill of track and field.

The men’s pole vault final is the major highlight of this session on the last day of the holiday weekend.
Swedish pole vault star Mondo Duplantis set three world records in 2024 and he is often at his best on the biggest stages as one of those world records was achieved at the Olympic Games, where he retained his title. How high can he go in 2025, on the hunt for a third consecutive world title?
A record 12 women broke 12.40 in the 100m hurdles in 2024 and they will all be looking to assert their dominance in 2025, when the world title is on the line. USA’s Masai Russell won the 2024 Olympic title ahead of Cyrena Samba-Mayela and defending champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn in the deepest women’s 100m hurdles final in Olympic history. Gold was decided by just 0.01.
In men’s long jump qualification, Japanese athletes such as Yuki Hashioka will be looking to advance to the finals. In the men’s 3000m steeplechase final, Ryuji Miura will look for his second consecutive appearance and first medal.

Two track finals are scheduled for the fourth day.
Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon became the first woman to win three Olympic gold medals in a single track discipline when she won the 1500m in Paris. She had previously become the first three-time women’s world 1500m title-winner in Budapest. In Tokyo she’ll have the chance to make it four but she could be up against some formidable opposition, including the likes of her fellow Olympic medallists Jess Hull and Georgia Bell, and 2023 world medallists Diribe Welteji and Sifan Hassan. There is also hope that Japanese record-holder Nozomi Tanaka will make the final.
Not since 2017 has a world 110m hurdles title been won by anyone other than USA’s Grant Holloway. He has the chance to go for world title no.4 in Tokyo and will do so off the back of completing his set of global titles by winning a first Olympic gold in Paris.
Looking to impress the home fans could be Shunsuke Izumiya, who came fifth at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, or Rachid Muratake, who came fifth at the Paris Olympics.
The session also includes the men’s high jump final where Ryoichi Akamatsu, who finished fifth in the Paris Olympics, will aim to appear in the final again.

The fifth day’s session has two track and two field finals scheduled.
The men’s 1500 final promises a historical contest. Jakob Ingebrigtsen won the Olympic title in Tokyo but then had to settle for silver behind Jake Wightman and Josh Kerr at the next two World Championships. In Paris Cole Hocker sprang the surprise by getting gold ahead of Kerr and Yared Nuguse. Whose turn will it be in Tokyo in 2025?
In the women’s pole vault, Australia’s Nina Kennedy and USA’s Katie Moon shared the last world title in Budapest, when they both cleared 4.90m and couldn’t be separated. Kennedy then claimed the Olympic title ahead of defending champion Moon. They could clash again in Tokyo.
China’s Wang Jianan won world long jump gold in Oregon in 2022 and Japan’s Yuki Hashioka will have ambitions of joining him in becoming a medal winner in Tokyo.
This session also includes semifinals for both the women’s and men’s 400m hurdles, where world record-holders Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Karsten Warholm, plus global stars Femke Bol, Rai Benjamin and Alison dos Santos, could be in action.
In men’s javelin throw qualification, the Japanese team will hope to see Genki Dean and Ryohei Arai advance to the final, while Paris Olympic 200m semifinalist Towa Uzawa will hope to reach at least the semifinals again in Tokyo.

Another two track and two field finals are on the schedule for day six.
The men’s 400m final should be a high-level contest with the likes of USA’s Quincy Hall, who won gold at the Paris Olympics, and Britain’s Matthew Hudson-Smith, who won silver at the Paris Olympics and the World Championships in Budapest.
The women’s 400m final promises another top-level race as Dominican Republic’s Marileidy Paulino – who set an Olympic record to win gold in Paris – goes on the hunt for more medals. Venezuelan Yulimar Rojas holds the world record in the women’s triple jump but could not compete at the Paris Olympics due to injury. Will she fully recover in time to compete in Tokyo? Representing Japan, Nozomi Tanaka and Yuma Yamamoto could advance to the final as they get started in the women’s 5000m heats.

Five finals are scheduled for this Friday night session.
In the men’s 400m hurdles final, the world record-holder, Norwegian Karsten Warholm, could compete against the world’s second fastest, USA’s Rai Benjamin, and the third fastest, Brazilian Alison dos Santos. Will the Japan National Stadium also see a battle for supremacy in the women’s 400m hurdles final between the world record-holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone of USA and the world’s second fastest, Dutch athlete Femke Bol? World records were set in both events at the Tokyo Olympics and records could fall again at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25.
The men’s 200m final should be top-class, with USA’s Noah Lyles aiming for a second consecutive double and Paris Olympics gold medallist Letsile Tebogo of Botswana at the centre of the action. In the men’s triple jump final, could Spaniard Jordan Alejandro Diaz Fortun break the world record for the first time in 30 years after he recorded 18.18m at the 2024 European Championships, making him the third-best triple jumper of all time. Home star Haruka Kitaguchi will hope for a strong start as she competes in the women’s javelin throw qualification.

The men’s and women’s 20km race walk finals take place on the penultimate morning.
As with the marathon, the race walk course for this event starts and finishes at the National Stadium, going from the outer grounds of the stadium to the Meiji Shrine Outer Garden and back again via the ginkgo-lined avenue. The Japanese team expects to make its presence felt in the men’s 20km race walk. The women’s 20km race walk could be led by Spaniard Maria Perez, who won the double along with the 35km race walk at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest. How close will Nanako Fujii and the rest of the Japanese contingent be?
Men’s discus throw qualification also takes place. In Budapest, Sweden’s Daniel Stahl set a championship record in this much-anticipated event. But attention will also be on Lithuanian Mykolas Alekna after he broke the longest-standing world record in men’s athletics in 2024, surpassing a record set 38 years ago.

The highlight of this session will be the women’s javelin final.
Haruka Kitaguchi, a gold medallist at the Paris Olympics and 2023 World Championships in Budapest, will try again to win at the World Athletics Championships hosted in her home country.
In Budapest, the men’s 800m final was a fierce battle with five runners separated by just one second. Expect more of the same in Tokyo, in an event that has seen the world all-time list seriously rewritten in 2024, led by Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi who ran 1:41.11 to become the joint second-fastest 800m runner in history. In the women’s 5000m final, Kenyan Faith Kipyegon could challenge for her second consecutive gold in a fierce battle with Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands and others. Nozomi Tanaka, who finished eighth in Budapest, will hope to reach her second consecutive final and break her own Japanese record.
This session will also feature the heats for the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. There is always drama with relay racing and teams will be hoping for a smooth path to the final, where US teams will be looking to successfully defend their 4x100m titles, and USA and the Netherlands will hope for more 4x400m success.
The Japanese men’s team will aim to advance to the finals in both relays, matching their performance at the Paris Olympics.

Men’s decathlon action continues during this session, on the final day of the Championships.
In this ultimate event for all-rounders, top athletes contest all aspects of athletics –running, jumping and throwing – at the highest level. The winner earns the title “World’s Greatest Athlete” and the respect of his peers. The competition is expected to be close, with strong contenders including Paris Olympic gold medallist Markus Rooth of Norway and Paris Olympic and Budapest world bronze medallist Lindon Victor of Grenada. Unlike other competitions, the same athletes will appear several times over a short period, allowing spectators to show their support throughout.

In the 4x100m, the highlight of both the men’s and women’s races is set to be the fierce battle for the top spot between the US and Jamaican teams. The Japanese men’s team will be aiming for medals in both relays.
In the women’s high jump final, the world record-holder, Ukrainian Yaroslava Mahuchikh, is expected to go for gold again. Excitement at the National Stadium will peak as finals for nine events are scheduled – the most in any single session at this year’s Championships. They also include the women’s 800m, men’s 5000m, men’s discus throw and men’s decathlon.
